Create child items (hierarchy)
Items in a document can be organized hierarchically. A child item is nested under a parent item, forming a tree structure that's visible in the Navigation Panel on the left side of Document View.
This is useful for:
- Breaking a high-level requirement into sub-requirements.
- Organizing related items under a thematic heading.
- Mirroring a hierarchical document structure (e.g., a section containing sub-sections).
To create a child item:
- Select the parent item in Document View or in the Navigation Panel.
- Click the Add child item button in the top bar, or right-click the parent and choose Add child item from the context menu.
A new item is created immediately below the parent and as its child in the hierarchy tree. The new item is auto-checked-out to you, just like a top-level item.
To rearrange the hierarchy:
Open the Navigation Panel on the left. You can drag items here to restructure:
- To assign a new parent, drag an item and drop it onto the new parent.
- To reorder siblings, drag the item to the new position — a horizontal line indicates where it will land.
A few rules to keep in mind:
- Each item can only have one parent.
- There's no limit on how many children a parent can have.
- There's no limit on hierarchical depth — though deeper than 3–4 levels usually becomes hard to read.
- Moving an item is a modification, so the moved item must be checked out.
Headings vs items. If the item type is Heading (set via the isRequirement attribute), Visure displays it as a numbered section header in Document View — 1, 1.1, 1.1.1, etc. Heading numbers are auto-assigned based on hierarchy position. Items below headings keep their normal codes.
